Roger Williams (the Puritan, not the country music singer!) is well known as the founder of Rhode Island. He was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his divergent religious views that threatened that theocracy. But few people know how radical Williams was for his time and how consistently he spoke truth to power, at risk of his life. His courage, integrity, and ideas about religion, politics, and the state set a standard that can inspire us in these difficult political times.
